We know that Information is power. Check out these five essential reports that Mijente collaborated on with key partners and learn more!
1. Automating Deportation, 2024
Check out “Automating Deportation: The Artificial Intelligence Behind the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration Enforcement Regime”. Our report with Just Futures Law (JFL) dives straight into how the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is using AI to step up detentions and deportations– all at the expense of our immigrants, families, and the larger U.S community. Big Tech, big corporations, and private sector representatives can’t wait to cash in on the exploitation of our gente, but we might fight back.
2. The Dirty Side of Clean Energy, 2024
Mijente and IDEBAJO commissioned research for the report “The Dirty Side of Clean Energy”. It revealed how so-called clean energy initiatives in Puerto Rico have led to environmental damage, displacement, and higher living costs. Meanwhile, private, corporate megaprojects and their investors have profited immensely at the expense of the people. Our findings unquestionably exposed the truth: Industrial-scale, corporate, and hedge fund-owned solar projects are not a clean alternative to the existing electrical system.
3. Sabotaging Sanctuary, 2022
In partnership with Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition (CIRC), JFL, and others, we put out “Sabotaging Sanctuary: How Data Brokers Give ICE Backdoor Access To Colorado’s Data and Jails”. For years community members have raised concerns about how our personal information falls into the hands of Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) — including when sanctuary policies are present. It has now been confirmed that ICE uses technology to get around policies meant to limit their cooperation with local law enforcement.
4. Futuro y Esperanza, 2022
Mijente proudly released the first national comprehensive study on Latinx attitudes about policing and safety in the United States and Puerto Rico, “Futuro y Esperanza: Latinx Perspectives on Policing and Safety”. When it comes to public safety, for us the main takeaway is that there is a lot of hope in the role that our gente can play in the fight against police violence and the safety of our families. We believe in our gente and our communities, that together we can envision and build futures beyond the constraints of punitive measures.
5. Deadly Digital Wall, 2021
For years we have been sounding the alarm on the harms of U.S. government agencies expanding their use of technology and surveillance to monitor and target our communities at large, with a key focus on migrants. Our report “The Deadly Digital Wall”, with No Border Wall Coalition and JFL, shares how the expansion into biometric surveillance, collecting DNA, voice, and facial data in border communities are being used as the testing grounds for surveillance nationally.
